Budget boarding
I soon learned that snowboarding can be a pretty expensive hobby, especially if you ever want to travel abroad to explore some of the best slopes that Europe and North America have to offer. Unless you win the lottery or develop some piece of super human resource software that makes you a millionaire, you’re not going to be able to afford an overseas boarding trip every year. Which leaves the alternatives to either do your local dry ski slope and all the blisters, scrapes and cuts that entails or heading to one of Scotland’s ski resorts. Doesn’t sound too appealing, does it? But the snowboarding facilities north of the border are improving every year, and Aviemore is becoming the unofficial UK capital of cool – at least for those who understand what the words alley-oop and mogul really mean!

I remember going to Aviemore when I was a kid on a really boring family holiday in the Scottish Highlands, and was less than impressed when my boarder mates suggested a trip there last winter for some snow. I was talked into it by the cheap prices and the fact that boarding is boarding, whether you’re stuck in a backwards Scottish town or a bustling US winter resort. However, things have changed in Aviemore since I was last there. The town itself is still a bit twee and tartan for my tastes, but there are some excellent bars and clubs during the winter season, cheap self catering accommodation and excellent slopes – and in recent years the snow has been pretty plentiful too!

The Cairngorm slopes are usually open between December and March and are ideal for beginners and intermediates, though there are only a few really difficult runs, whether you’re a skier or a boarder. A holiday here is more of a social event than an opportunity to grab some serious board time. But unless all you friends are boarding enthusiasts, the chances are your group will be mixed ability anyway. And there’s nothing worse than some poor beginner getting left behind at the hotel every morning or – worse – trying to keep up with their mates and ending up going home in traction…
